Sword at Sunset is a novel for adults published in 1963 by Hodder & Stoughton. The novel reconstructs a ‘historical’ Dark Age King Arthur, drawing on quasi-historical sources and contemporary archaeology, as well as medieval romance traditions. From his deathbed, the war leader Artos narrates how he held back the Saxon invasions of late 5th-century Britain for a generation, but lost his best friend and his wife through the machinations of his incestuously-begotten son Medraut.

It is the fifth novel featuring the Flavius Aquila family chronologically and the sixth in publication order. The Lantern Bearers is its direct prequel.

Plot[]

Artorius, called Artos the Bear, illegitimate nephew of the High King of Britain, asks his newly-crowned uncle Ambrosius Aurelianus to make him Count of Britain and give him independent command of a cavalry force to fight the invading Saxons in the north. Though Artos cannot inherit his throne, Ambrosius gives him the title, and the seal of their ancestor the emperor Magnus Maximus (1). Artos returns to their ancestral land of Arfon in northwest Cymru to evaluate his horse herds and, lost in a mountain mist on Yr Widdfa, takes shelter in an unfamiliar steading owned by an oddly familiar woman on the far side of the mountain from his home valley of Nant Ffrancon (2). Ygerna drugs his supper and seduces him, and in the morning reveals that she is his half-sister, neglected by their father Utha because she was not a son, and that she means to bear Artos a son and raise him to hate his father, as she was raised. Artos flees in horror and guilt (3). He tells no one of what happened, even Ambrosius when they meet on the Island of Apples on Artos's road to the coast (4). Artos takes a party of his Companions south to a horse fair on the Mediterrranean coast to buy breeding stock for his cavalry, where an unfathomable young Breton harper named Bedwyr persuades him to buy a dangerous stallion on the condition that Bedwyr can get them back to Britain without incident. He does so, and Bedwyr becomes one of Artos's Companions (5).

Artos dates his frequent conflicts with the Church from a clash with an abbey that cannot afford to shelter them after they have protected them from a Saxon war party, and from whom they take their young surgeon, Gwalchmai (6). They have cleared Lindum territory of Saxons when they hear that Hengest, the greatest Saxon warlord in Britain, has joined his son Octa to the north in Eburacum territory. Without adequate support from Lindum, they fight an indecisive battle and retire to the legionary fortress at Deva for the winter (7). Artos's ally Kinmarcus of Deva warns him of a rumoured alliance of the Saxons, northern Picts and Hibernian Scots (8). Hengest and Octa march on Deva in the spring, where Artos lays an ambush on the road and Hengest is killed at last (9). The Britons march on Eburacum, which allied with the local Brigantes and the British slaves within they take, killing Octa. Artos's Companion Flavian captures Octa's young nephew Cerdic, son of Vortigern the High King of Britain, protecting the body of his mother Rowen, and Artos releases him over Bedwyr's protests (10).

Artos turns his attention to the north and the gathering forces of the Pictish chieftain Huil son of Caw. The army marches for the Roman fortress of Trimontium, which they take from its Pict occupiers. Inside, they find the body of a woman of the Little Dark People, whom they bury, only for her sister and brothers to appear to request the body (12). Artos goes with them to their hidden village as a show of good faith, and their Old Woman declares that they will aid Artos against the Picts (13). In the spring, their contact Druim Dhu warns Artos of Huil's forces gathering in the Caledon forest, and Artos's army lures them into a decisive defeat at the headwaters of the Clyde and Tweed (14).

Artos goes to the territory of the Damnonii to court their support for his army; clan chieftain Maglaunus offers his assistance on the condition that he marry his daughter Guenhumara (15), to which Artos, attracted but reluctant, agrees after Guenhumara privately begs him not to humiliate her (16). Their wedding night goes poorly, and Artos discovers that he is still deeply traumatized by his encounter with Ygerna (17).

Back at Trimontium, Artos's Companions reluctantly accept the news of his marriage. One of his squadrons is ambushed and its captain, Gault, dies of his wounds, leaving his lover Levin in command. Guenhumara arrives for the winter at Samhain and makes the dubious acquaintance of Bedwyr (18). Artos and Guenhumara's intimacy problems continue, though Artos is in love with her. Two summers later, Artos turns south to Eburacum, taking Guenhumara with him to stay in the House of Holy Ladies during the campaign season, where she feels caged (19). In the third winter of their marriage, a store shed burns down during the Midwinter festivities, destroying much of their food supplies, and by February the garrison is dying of scurvy and starvation, and Levin disappears. On the night before they must draw lots to send someone on a hopeless suicide run for help, Artos and Guenhumara achieve the only good sex of their marriage, but the supply train arrives the next day, summoned early by the now-dead Levin (20). Guenhumara falls pregnant and goes into labour two months early on the way back to Trimontium, and is forced to deliver in the village of the Dark People, whom she believes steal her daughter's health because they do not believe in rearing daughters before sons (21). They name the child Hylin and in the spring bid farewell to Trimontium and the Dark People, and return to Venta Belgarum, where Ambrosius is aged and the Saxon settlements of the east coast are strengthening (22).

Hylin becomes sickly during their second winter in Venta and dies in the spring when Artos is away on campaign, and Guenhumara blames Artos for leaving them in the house of the Dark People to have her strength stolen. The night of Hylin's funeral, Medraut comes to Artos's house to join the Company, sent by the dying Ygerna, and Artos takes him as a harbinger of fate (24). Artos gives him into Bedwyr's squadron and he grows popular over the next three years; Artos, Guenhumara, and Bedwyr grow closer, though Guenhumara remains withdrawn after Hylin's death; and Artos learns that Ambrosius is dying of cancer (25). Ambrosius takes Artos and his oldest friend Aquila to his hunting villa to tell them that he means to die soon without naming an heir, so that Artos may take the leadership legitimately in advance of a broad Saxon alliance they expect to face in the coming summer (26).

The churchmen and soldiers of the Council of the Kingdom agree on the compromise that Artos will remain the Rex Belliorum while the question of the High Kingship is laid aside in preparation of a Saxon offensive, which scouts bring Artos word of immediately after the meeting (28). British meet the Saxons in pitched battle in midsummer at Badon Hill in the White Horse Vale and emerge victorious (29), killing Aelle the Saxon war leader, though Cerdic and Oisc escape and Aquila and Cabal are killed and Bedwyr nearly dies of wounds. His troops proclaim Artos Emperor of the West at the White Horse on the night after the battle (30). In autumn, Artos sits down with the remaining leaders of the routed Saxons to negotiate a peace; they propose to defend the southeast coasts against further incursions in exchange for being left alone; despite Vortigern's precedent, Artos accepts, with the proviso that Cerdic go into exile. Medraut, apparently jealous of Artos's odd rapport with Cerdic, privately demands to be named Artos's heir and is refused (31).

Artos returns to Venta, where Bedwyr is mostly recovered, and Guenhumara seems less unhappy, and overhears Medraut spreading rumours about them to the young Companions of his squadron (32). At the end of the winter Artos returns early from a training exercise and is summoned by Medraut to catch Bedwyr and Guenhumara in a tryst. Deeply hurt, he sends them both away (33).

Ten years pass, and Cerdic lands on the south coast while Artos is bedridden with pneumonia, and Cei suspects Medraut of conspiring with Cerdic (34). Cerdic's West Saxons subside into border warfare over the next years, until word reaches Artos one harvest-time that Medraut has joined Cerdic's alliance of Saxons, Scots, and Picts in the south (35). In the early hours of the morning before the final battle, Bedwyr returns to ride among the Companions, having left Guenhumara in a Welsh nunnery. He tells Artos that they were not happy (36). When the battle is joined, Cerdic's Welsh reinforcements are nearer than Constantine's Dumnonii, and Artos leads a feint to draw Medraut's cavalry away from the main British host. Artos kills Medraut after receiving a mortal wound from him, and Bedwyr takes Artos to the monastery on the Island of Apples. There he orders Bedwyr to tell no one of his death for reasons of morale, and gives the High Kingship to Constantine "until I come again." The British are narrowly victorious, and Artos believes that he has bought a few more years for their way of life (37).

Chronology[]

Sword at Sunset is framed as Artos's reminiscence as he lies dying. The events of main narrative begin 40 years earlier. The main quasi-historical event is the Battle of Badon, traditionally dated roughly 500 CE.[1]

Inconsistency with The Lantern Bearers[]

Sword at Sunset explicitly begins three days after the final scene of 1959's The Lantern Bearers, whose duration as calculated by this wiki is twenty-two years from the Roman withdrawal to Ambrosius's coronation, c.450-472 CE. In the 1960 article "Combined Ops", Sutcliff specified her intended dates of 449-472 for the novel. Artos is fourteen years old in the tenth year of the story (TLB 16), making him 26 at its close. Vortigern, the father of Cerdic, dies in the tenth or eleventh year of the novel (TLB 17), and has therefore been dead for eleven years at its close.

In Sword at Sunset, however, it is said to be thirty years at the beginning of the novel since the Roman withdrawal of 449 CE (1), seventy since the 410 CE sack of Rome (4), and "close on two hundred" [sic, presumably an error for 100] since the 378 Battle of Adrianople (1), or c. 480 CE. If this apparent seven or eight year discrepancy is ignored and Sword at Sunset is assumed to begin as The Lantern Bearers ends, regardless of the precise year, inconsistencies remain. Artos is thirty-five years old in the twelfth year of Sword at Sunset (17), but counting from his stated age in The Lantern Bearers, he would be thirty-eight. More difficult to resolve, Cerdic is fourteen years old in the tenth year of Sword at Sunset (11), meaning he was born four years before the beginning of the novel but at least seven years after his father's death, eleven years before the end of The Lantern Bearers.

Given the problems of reconciling these competing timeframes, this timeline is marked by the passage of time in the novel, without absolute dates. Ages are given as they appear in Sword at Sunset. If calculated strictly from Sword at Sunset's internal historical references, the novel can be roughly dated from late 479 to 519 CE, using 500 CE for the Battle of Badon. If starting from The Lantern Bearers's somewhat more precisely-dated events, Sword at Sunset takes place from late 472 to 512 CE.

Continuity with other novels[]

As noted above, Sword at Sunset is the direct sequel to the 1959 novel The Lantern Bearers, featuring Artos's mentor Aquila, in which Artos appears as a child and young man, along with Ambrosius, Flavian, and the first Cabal. Sword at Sunset is the fifth in the internal chronology of a series, otherwise written for younger readers, following Aquila's family, linked by the appearance of their heirloom dolphin ring. In Dawn Wind (1961), set three generations later at the final Saxon victory in the late sixth century, stories of Artos the Bear and his men are retold by the Britons, who still remember his Red Dragon standard and his Gaulish cavalry horses. The Shining Company (1990), also set in the late sixth century, is narrated by a Welshman from Artos's native hills and Artos's Companions are the conscious model for a new brotherhood of three hundred, which tragically lacks the leadership to unite the fractured British kingdoms. (The novel is based on the historical events that inspired Y Gododdin, a Welsh poem thought to be the earliest literary mention of Arthur.)

Sutcliff also wrote a series of retellings of medieval romance versions of the Arthurian legend. The Sword and the Circle (1981), The Light Beyond the Forest (1979), The Road to Camlann (1981) are based primarily on Sir Thomas Malory's 15th-century Morte d'Arthur but incorporate various other tales. Like Malory, they nominally take place in 5th-century Britain but make little attempt to sketch a historically-accurate setting. Tristan and Iseult (1974) intersects with them.

In Heroes and History (1965), a non-fiction work for children, Sutcliff summarized and contrasted the Maloryian romance and reconstructed, 'historical' versions of King Arthur. The latter's background and deeds are substantially the same as she "reconstructed" them in Sword at Sunset.

A 'historical' Arthur?[]

The Author's Note explains,

"Just as the saga of Charlemagne and his paladins is the Matter of France, so for fourteen hundred years or so, the Arthurian Legend has been the Matter of Britain. A tradition at first, then a hero-tale gathering to itself fresh detail and fresh glories and the rainbow colours of romance as it went along, until with Sir Thomas Malory it came to its fullest flowering.

"But of late years historians and anthropologists have come more and more to the belief that the Matter of Britain is indeed "matter and not moonshine." That behind all the numinous mist of pagan, early Christian and medieval splendours that have gathered about it, there stands the solitary figure of one great man. No knight in shining armour, no Round Table, no many-towered Camelot; but a Romano-British war leader, to whom, when the Barbarian darkness came flooding in, the last guttering lights of civilization seemed worth fighting for.

"Sword at Sunset is an attempt to re-create from fragments of known facts, from likelihoods and deductions and guesswork pure and simple, the kind of man this war leader may have been, and the story of his long struggle."

Sutcliff described to Raymond H. Thompson how she came to believe that there was a real Arthur:

"I did not discover the historical side of Arthurian legend until I was eighteen or nineteen, when I read two intriguing books by some absolute crackpot called Dayrel Reid: inspired crackpots are very special when you find them. One was called The Battle for Britain in the Fifth Century; the other was called The Rise of Wessex. They dealt with the Dark Ages, but particularly with the Arthurian legend and with the possibilities of an historical Arthur. I was fascinated by this idea, and I set off looking for all the other clues that I could find. Then, little by little, other people, like Geoffrey Ashe, began to write about the historical Arthur, and I read their books as they came along. I always believed very strongly that there could be no smoke without a fire. A legendary hero almost always has a basis in a real person, around whom bits of legend and bits of other people's stories gather and collect, rather like amber collecting little bits of paper. I was convinced that there was a real man in the middle somewhere."

In an interview with John Withrington (Quondam et Futurus, Vol. 1, No. 4, Winter 1991), she said:

RS I suppose the mystery was the great thing about Arthur: obviously the Arthur that Malory produced is gorgeous, but he’s not really very reliable factually. But one does feel strongly that behind all this there’s certainly––well I think there’s certainly––a man, possibly a group of men, but I think just one man, who all the other sort of legends have sort of accrued to.

JW Do you believe he actually existed?

RS Yes, I do. I don’t think he was King Arthur. He was just a war leader of some sort, possibly a member of the old Royal House, as I made him in Sword at Sunset. There’s a fascination, a mystery, as far as I’m concerned. And for me in a way he stands for Britain, for the Celtic way of life.

RS A wonderful book that I found in the war––a little book, and it was by an absolute crack-pot––and it was called The Battle for Britain in the Fifth Century. It was all about getting back to a historical Arthur, and the position of people like Vortigern, and people like that, who and what they probably really were. It was sort of quite crazy, but I’ve always found a really good crack-pot very often sort of hits on some idea of what could be true, where the sort of serious history would undoubtedly miss. So he did a lot for me too. As did Geoffrey Ashe. He was a great source of inspiration."

Sutcliff provided another account of her initial researches into a historical Arthur in the 1960 essay "Combined Ops", describing how she came to write her 1959 novel The Lantern Bearers, featuring Artos's mentor Aquila, to which Sword at Sunset became the immediate sequel.

"One of the first things I discovered was that although the last regular Legions were withdrawn in 410, the last Auxiliary troops did not follow them until about forty years later. That pushed the start of my story on to 449 ... It also opened up the tremendously exciting possibility that he might have come in contact with the historical hero who stood behind the legends of King Arthur; for it is, I think, generally accepted now that the fighting years of that hero, chieftain or war lord or whatever he was, lay in the second half of the fifth century and the beginning of the sixth.

"I turned to Gildas, Nennius, William of Malmesbury, and Geoffrey of Monmouth. They made enchanting reading, save for Gildas who was too busy telling everybody what he thought of them to be pleasant, but they either didn’t mention Arthur at all or seemed too full of dragons to be really reliable.

"After that I started on the county library. I wanted books about the Roman withdrawal, the coming of the Saxons, the Dark Ages in general, Arthur in particular. I didn’t know the names of any of the books I wanted, but that was what they had to be about. The county library, as always, rose nobly to the occasion and after a frustrating delay while they searched the rest of the United Kingdom on my behalf, produced, among other books, The Battle for Britain in the 5th Century and The Rise of Wessex, both by T. Dayrell Reed. These proved to be treasure trove. They provided a possible and coherent reconstruction of the years between the fall of Roman Britain and the rise of Saxon England – desperate and heroic years when the British people, far from lying down passively to be slaughtered, as was at one time believed, were fighting to the last ditch. Also, in the first volume the author had a great deal to say about the historical Arthur, even a theory to offer about who he might have been by birth. And the theory seemed to me a good one."

Literary traditions[]

The Author's Note continues,

"Certain features I have retained from the traditional Arthurian fabric, because they have the atmosphere of truth. I have kept the original framework, or rather two interwrought frameworks: the Sin which carries with it its own retribution; the Brotherhood broken by the love between the leader's woman and his closest friend. These have the inevitability and pitiless purity of outline that one finds in classical tragedy, and that belong to the ancient and innermost places of man. I have kept the theme, which seems to me to be implicit in the story, of the Sacred King, the Leader whose divine right, ultimately, is to die for the life of the people.

"Bedwyr, Cei and Gwalchmai are the earliest of all Arthur's companions to be noted by name, and so I have retained them, giving the friend-and-lover's part to Bedwyr, who is there both at the beginning and at the end, instead of to Lancelot, who is a later French importation. Arthur's hound and his white horse I have kept also, both for their ritual significance and because the Arthur – or rather Artos – I found myself coming to know so well, was the kind of man who would have set great story by his dogs and his horses."

In her analysis of Sword at Sunset in The Openness of Myth: The Arthurian Tradition in the Middle Ages and Today (2004), Nicole Dentzien observes that the "traditional Arthurian fabric" to which Sutcliff referred was principally Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. Other traditional sources Sutcliff named as influences do not contain all of the "retained" plot elements: Arthur's incest, Guinevere and Lancelot's adultery, and the brotherhood of knights. (Dentzien notes, along with Withrington, that Sutcliff was the first novelist to blend the roles of Lancelot and Bedivere-Bedwyr.) She further underlines "the sacrificial kingship, human blindness, and predestination" as "underlying concepts" in Sword at Sunset that are also implicit in Le Morte Darthur.

Sacred, sacrificial leaders were a favourite theme of Sutcliff's (found in The Mark of the Horse Lord, Sun Horse, Moon Horse, and other of her novels), drawn from James Frazer's multivolume comparison of ancient and modern religions The Golden Bough (1890-1915), which popularized the idea that the ritual sacrifice of kings was a common feature of pagan religions. Sutcliff noted reading it in her memoir Blue Remembered Hills, and said in a 1973 interview with Emma Fisher, "The Golden Bough is I suppose a bit dated now, but it's still the basic book on the primitive faiths."

Dentzien identifies other, non-Maloryian sources for elements of the novel:

  • Nennius's Historia Brittonum, different manuscripts of which refer to Arthur either as a war leader or a king (or both), lists his battles. Sutcliff adapts Trelawney Dayrell Reed's interpretation of their sometimes-obscure sites. The dog Cabal and a tradition that Arthur killed his son (Amr) are given in two miracle stories.
  • The Annales Cambriae, sometimes attached to the Historia Brittonum, mention the battles of Badon and the much later Camlann, at which Medraut is named, without any explanation of his relationship to Arthur. Both the Historia and the Annales mention Arthur carrying a Christian symbol into different battles; Sutcliff follows the Annals in using Badon.
  • Arthur appears in six 11th-12th century Saints' Lives – Cadoc, Gildas, Caradoc, Illtud, Carannog, and Padarn – as a grasping tyrant. Sutcliff does not borrow any specific incident from the Lives but stresses Artos's fraught relationship with the Church.
  • From the Mabinogion come references to "the birds of Rhiannon" and the names of Cei, Bedwyr, Gwalchmai and the dog Cabal.
  • Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae provides the Bishop Dubricius and Artos's two coronations, one as a Roman emperor.
  • T.H. White's The Once and Future King makes Lancelot, the character combined with Bedivere to form Bedwyr in Sword at Sunset, extremely ugly, inspired by a remark in Malory. Sutcliff greatly admired the novel, telling Raymond Thompson, "It goes so deep and it's on so many levels: it seems to go deeper than any other written version I know."

Chapters 14 and 15 of Sword at Sunset give the great forest Cit Coit Caledon [sic] the name "Melanudragil" [sic] in the language of the Little Dark People. The name may be taken from John Buchan's 1927 novel Witch Wood, about ancient paganism persisting in 17th-century Scotland in the forest of "Melanudrigill." The novel introduces it,

My mouth shaped the word "Melanudrigill," and I knew that I saw Woodilee as no eye had seen it for three centuries, when, as its name tells, it still lay in the shadow of a remnant of the Wood of Caledon, that most ancient forest where once Merlin harped and Arthur mustered his men. . . .

Sutcliff said in her essay "Beginning with Beowulf" that she began reading Buchan when she was around ten years old.

Archaeological sources[]

The Author's Note continues,

"When the Roman fort of Trimontium was excavated, the bones of a "perfectly formed dwarf girl" were found lying in a pit under those of nine horses. An unexplained find, to which, in Artos's capture of the fortress and in the incident of "The People of the Hills", I have attempted an explanation. So it goes on... almost every part of the story, even to the unlikely linkup between Medraut and that mysterious Saxon with a Britsh name, Cerdic the half-legendary founder of Wessex, has some kind of basis outside the author's imagination."

The skeleton was discovered during excavations at Trimontium in 1905-1910 and described in dig supervisor James Curle's report A Roman Frontier Fort and its People: The Fort of Newstead in the Parish of Melrose (1911):

"[T]he most curious of all these human relics was the nearly complete skeleton of a dwarf, found in one of the pits. Professor Bryce estimates the age at from twenty-two to twenty-three years, and yet the height cannot have exceeded four feet six inches. Though the creature must have been a dwarf, the bones show no signs of rickets or other bone disease, being well formed but slight and slender to a remarkable degree. How it came to lie in the pit beneath the bones of nine horses is a problem of which no solution can be hoped for." (p.111)

"Hic Jacet Arthurus..."[]

Francis Brett Young's poem "Hic Jacet Arthurus Rex Quondam Rexque Futurus" from The Island (1944), which imagines the history of Britain from the Bronze Age to the Battle of Britain in verse, prefaces Sword at Sunset. The poem contrasts the embroidery of medieval Arthurian legend with the bare bones of inference about a post-Roman defender of besieged Britain. Sutcliff told John Withrington that discovering the poem acted as a spur:

JW You use a poem by Frances Brett Young in the introduction to Sword at Sunset. Did that actually inspire you in any way, or was it a fortuitous discovery?

RS No, it didn’t inspire me. I had thought of, begun to think of, the reconstruction of the historical Arthur, and then I came across this poem; didn’t know who it was by, but it sort of rang bells for me in all directions. It did have a great effect on getting me going on the book.

Writing process[]

Sutcliff described the composition of Sword at Sunset as a uniquely absorbing writing project to Raymond Thompson:

RT: Did you read any novels that portrayed Arthur as a Dark Age leader before you yourself did so?

RS: No, never, but I had determined from the time that I was very young that there was a real person there, and that I would love to find and reconstruct that person. For many, many years I had the wish to do it one day, but I knew that I wasn't yet ready to do it. Then one day quite suddenly I knew that I was ready, that the time had come when I really could cope with it. Most of the actual research I did for the book, apart from knowing the Arthurian story from the romance versions, was into Dark Age life and history as far as they were known. Then I worked into this setting the Arthur who seemed to me to carry weight, to be the most likely kind of person. It was very strange because I have never written a book which was so possessive. It was extraordinary--almost frightening. It took me about eighteen months to write, and it absolutely rode me thoughout the entire time. I would take the book to bed with me at night, and work there until I dropped off to sleep about two o'clock in the morning, too tired to see any more. Then I would wake up about six o'clock, still thinking about it. It was addictive. It was almost like having the story fed through to me, at times. I do my writing usually in three drafts, and I would go from the first to the second draft, from the second to the third, and find bits of the book that I had no recollection of having written at all. It was interesting, almost scary, but much of the material had this effect of being almost fed through to me, rather than being the result of my own research.

Another funny thing was that after I had finished the story I had great difficulty getting back into a woman's skin, because I had been living as a man for eighteen months, thinking as a man, making love as a man, always looking from a man's viewpoint. I am always deeply involved in my books. For me the book doesn't work if I am not. But I have never been as deeply involved as that before or since.

When I started writing Sword at Sunset I made at least three false starts, but I couldn't think what was the matter. I knew exactly what the story was that I wanted to tell, but it wouldn't come. Then suddenly the penny dropped: it had to be first-person singular. I had never done first-person singular before, but the moment I started doing it that way it came, like a bird. But I had problems with it: first-person singular is very different from third-person writing, and I had no experience of it at all. But it was the only way it could be written.

Abridged text[]

In an interview with Emma Fisher in The Pied Pipers (1974), Sutcliff described the material excised for a juvenile edition of Sword at Sunset:

A: After I’d written Sword at Sunset, I did an edited version for children, and they made me cut certain things – details of the battles, because they were too violent; and the fact that two of the soldiers were homosexuals, which was in fact a most natural thing to happen, and part of being a warrior. I discovered later that lots of children had been reading the adult version and loving it!

Q: There is quite a lot of homosexual feeling in your books, or at least very passionate friendship between people of the same sex. Is this part of the historical background (more plausible in the kind of society you write about than friendships between the sexes)? Or is this way of writing about love particularly suited to children’s (older children’s) books?

A: I would, I think, agree with you in all these suggestions, but add that I write mostly about men in a man’s world, fighting men; and the homosexual relationship, or at any rate very deep friendship between men, tends very much to occur in this type of society. I imagine the warrior “blood brother” relationship was often far closer to the homosexual than to any kind of brotherhood, though possibly the men themselves were not aware of this.

The edition was a 1965 paperback from Peacock, a Young Adult imprint of Penguin.[4] Sutcliff expressed her feelings about it in an interview with John Withrington in Quondam et Futurus (Vol. 1, No. 4 Winter 1991):

JW: The 1965 Peacock edition of Sword at Sunset was carefully abridged: in particular the sexual references, the tension between Artos and Guenhumara, the gay relationship between Gault and Levin were all missing...

RS: Part of the plot doesn't make sense otherwise!

JW: ...while in the unabridged version Artos reveals the truth to his wife about Medraut's conception. Even one of the chapters is retitled. How do you feel about alterations to your work?

RS: I don't like it. I didn't really know what was happening about that one, until it just sort of came out, you know.[5]

A 1967 abridged edition appeared in the "Heritage of Literature" series from Longmans, credited to J. P. Harries.[6] It is unclear whether the Longmans and Peacock abridgements are the same text.

Adaptations[]

A play of Sword at Sunset, adapted and directed by James Beagon, was produced at Edinburgh's Bedlam Theatre from 25 February to 1 March 2014. The final performance was filmed and can be viewed on YouTube.
