Lady in Waiting was Sutcliff's first for adults, published in 1956 by Hodder & Stoughton. It is based on the lives of Sir Walter Raleigh (spelled Ralegh throughout) and his wife, Bess Throckmorten.



Lady in Waiting opens in 1564 with a scene of Walter Ralegh at ten years old, and closes at his death in 1618.
